![]() Loving our enemies isn’t just not taking revenge-it’s also intentionally doing good to them! If we were only kind to those who were kind to us, we would not be fulfilling God’s call to love our enemies (Matthew 5:46–47). I know that when it comes to praying, it’s sometimes hard for kids AND adults to know where to start. Though “heaping burning coals” might seem like some kind of righteous revenge, the idea here is actually that our love and kindness would so confuse and frustrate our enemy that the result would be them turning to God-the source of the love we show them! Not only should we refuse to take revenge, but we should intentionally do good to those who we would consider our enemies. Let’s be honest-usually, our natural response when someone has hurt us is to hurt them back.īut God tells us something different in Romans 12:19–21:īeloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him if he is thirsty, give him something to drink for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. ![]() And even if we don’t physically take revenge, maybe we allow ourselves to be vengeful or unforgiving in our hearts. ![]() As adults, most of us have struggled with anger toward someone who has hurt us or even been tempted to take revenge. I’m sure you, like me, have had to break up many a squabble caused by one child feeling justified in hitting or yelling because the other child took something away from them. ![]()
